Their story

The uncertainty that comes with infertility is challenging for any couple, but navigating this path as a deaf couple has been especially tough. After getting married 18 years ago, we never imagined this struggle for ourselves. For a deaf couple, the trials and tribulations of the infertility journey can involve barriers that extend far beyond the emotional and physical challenges of the infertility itself. The countless medical appointments, fertility treatments, and consultations require access to interpreters and frustrating communication systems as well as having to navigate environments that are designed for hearing patients. Oftentimes, important information has to bridge a communication gap and questions may go unanswered. Advocating for proper care requires additional time, effort, and energy and after nearly 2 decades of infertility, these obstacles make an already emotionally exhausting experience feel even more difficult to reach. In the early years of our journey, we had to battle the ups and downs of PCOS and irregular cycles. After years of treatment and negative pregnancy tests, we were dealt another blow. We learned that low sperm count would be an additional hurdle we’d have to overcome. Feeling discouraged, but not willing to give up on our dream of a family, we turned to IVF in 2021. Two years later, all of our prayers were answered when we welcomed our sweet baby boy, Kasen. He is perfect in every way and is deaf just like his parents! Navigating life as a deaf family has been the most beautiful, rewarding journey. It has taught us so much about patience, communication, and deep unconditional love. Watching him grow has been the highlight of our lives. He is the kindest, gentlest, sweetest, and most naturally nurturing child. These early years of parenthood have been beyond rewarding but have made us realize that we are not yet complete. We would love to add one more blessing to our family and give Kasen a sibling. The beautiful part of going through IVF years ago is that we already have 11 potential siblings (frozen embryos) waiting safely in St. Louis, Mo from the beginning of our journey. Since then, we have relocated for Kasen to attend Texas School for the Deaf and now proudly call Austin, Texas, our new home. While we already have the embryos and we're ready to take the next steps, the out-of-pocket costs for a frozen embryo transfer, clinic coordination, and travel logistics are just beyond our reach right now. Between settling into a new city and carrying the lingering financial weight of a ten-year infertility battle, we've stretched ourselves as far as we can. Completing our family with one more baby would mean everything to us. Kasen is more than ready to be a wonderful big brother, and our home has so much more love ready to give. This grant would change our lives by helping us bridge that final gap to bring our baby home.
