Beginning Our Family – Sam & Kyle

My name is Kyle Roberts. Shortly after my thirtieth birthday, and only a couple of months before the first anniversary of mine and Sam's marriage, I was diagnosed with a non-seminomatous germ cell tumor, or a rapidly spreading form of testicular cancer. Unfortunately the cancer had spread beyond the initial tumor, and I had to have chemotherapy in addition to the surgery to remove the tumor. We were warned that this treatment would likely result in permanent sterility, so we banked what we could in the short amount of time we were given. It was a tough journey, with an intense chemo regiment that made me very, very sick. My wife and I had only been married a year, but she was a wonderful caretaker. One that I can't believe I had found so shortly before such a terrible time in my life. Sam loves children. We both do. She is a full-time nanny helping raise four wonderful children and I'm working on a degree in English Education. It was an unbelievable tragedy that we would be immediately given such an obstacle to having the life we both wanted. But we haven't given up, and we look forward to a future in which our home will have the extra patters of feet and echoes of voices that it needs.
